The story

Long ago, the world was full of fighting and unkindness, and it made God sad. But Noah loved God and walked with him. God told Noah to build a big boat called an ark, with room inside for his family and the animals. Noah did everything God asked. Two of every kind of animal came to the ark, and Noah's family went in with them. Then God shut the door. Rain fell for forty days and forty nights, until water covered the whole earth, and the ark floated safely on top. God remembered Noah. Slowly the water went down, and a dove brought back a fresh olive leaf. When everyone came out onto dry land, God promised never to flood the whole earth again. He set a rainbow in the clouds as the sign of his promise.

Talk about it
  • Noah built the ark before any rain came. Why do you think he trusted God?
  • What do you think it sounded like inside the ark with all those animals?
  • What did God promise when he put the rainbow in the clouds?
  • The next time you see a rainbow, what can it help you remember?
Ideas
  • The rainbow has four stripes. Pick a color for each one and say thank you to God for something with every stripe.
  • Draw animal faces looking out of the two windows, two of each kind.
  • Add a dove flying over the water with a green olive leaf in its beak.
