The story

God asked Jonah to go to the big city of Nineveh and tell the people to stop doing wrong. Jonah did not want to go, so he got on a ship sailing the other way. Then God sent a great storm. The waves crashed, and the sailors were afraid. Jonah knew the storm was his fault, so he told the sailors to throw him into the sea. When they did, the sea grew calm. God sent a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside it for three days and three nights. There in the dark, Jonah prayed and thanked God. Then God spoke to the fish, and it spit Jonah out onto dry land. God asked Jonah a second time, and this time Jonah went. The people of Nineveh said sorry, and God forgave them.

Talk about it
  • Why do you think Jonah ran away from what God asked him to do?
  • What did Jonah do while he was inside the big fish?
  • God gave Jonah a second chance. How do you think that made Jonah feel?
  • Is there something you find hard to do, even when you know it is right?
Ideas
  • Color the sea in lots of blues and greens, then give the big fish a bright color of its own.
  • Draw a tiny Jonah inside the fish, praying.
  • Act out the story together. Make a stormy sea with your hands, then let it go calm.
